Women of Wit and Will
Mortal Folly and Bushwick Shakes are proud to present an evening of five (mostly) new one-act plays about Women throughout history who take extraordinary measures to pursue their convictions, even when flying in the face of societal norms. All five pieces are written from the female perspective, and contain vivid characters of both humor and humanity. Featuring new pieces by Mortal Folly’s Artistic Director Katherine Harte-DeCoux and award-winning New York playwright James Armstrong, Broadside is a thrilling look at some of history’s lesser-known stories, told from the point of view of those whose voices were often silenced. Swashbuckling adventure, poignant loss and rollicking laughter await in these five tales…
First to Draw Blood – Drawn from one of the most popular folktales in Scandinavian mythology, Viking Princess Alvild prefers a life of piracy to submitting to an arranged marriage. But her betrothed, Prince Alf, is not so easily thwarted in his pursuit! What will be the outcome when these two strong-willed champions finally come face-to-face?
Lieutenant Nun: The Thrilling Adventures of Catalina de Erauso – Based on the allegedly “true confession” of the most celebrated European court personality of 1624, notorious cross-dressing conquistador Catalina de Erauso has laughed in the face of certain death all over South America. Now basking in her fame and fortune, she has hired only somewhat competent actors to assist in the dramatic portrayal of her memoirs. Dueling! Bragging! Death! Heckling! Who could ask for more?
The True Author… Revealed – A shocking truth revealed after 200 years! Miss Delia Bacon presents her lecture on the “true author” of the plays formerly attributed to Mister William Shakespeare! Based on a true story, this eccentric but brilliantly driven woman delivers a lecture in England under the patronage of Nathaniel Hawthorne.
The Sign in the Scarlet Prison – Inspired by an Emily Dickinson poem: An imprisoned heir to the throne, an unyielding teacher, a mysterious cross in blood, and a deadly lesson in swordplay.
Desdemona: a play about a handkerchief – Paula Vogel’s brilliant behind-the-scenes look at the women of Othello, this incisive commentary raises serious questions about the confines of class and gender. An irreverent and hilarious examination of what women really think of each other and of men.
